U.S. Navy Awards Lockheed Martin Undersea Warfare Systems Contracts Valued at $61 Million
SYRACUSE, NY, December 4th, 2000 -- Lockheed Martin today announced that the U.S. Navy has awarded contracts, worth a total of $61 million, for additional AN/SQQ-89(V)15 undersea warfare systems and related services. Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics and Surveillance Systems (NE&SS)-Undersea Systems in Syracuse will manage the contracts, which are part of a multi-version AN/SQQ-89(V) production and engineering program at the facility. "These contracts allow us to continue to provide the U.S. Navy with the finest underwater warfare (UW) system in the world," said Bill Carlson, director, AN/SQQ-89(V) programs.
The first award is a firm-fixed-price contract for $50 million that will allow the U.S. Navy to purchase three AN/SQQ-89(V)15 ship systems together with required engineering and training support. The AN/SQQ-89(V) Surface Ship Undersea Warfare Combat System, which will be used on the Arleigh Burke-class Aegis destroyers, allows surface ships to detect, classify and localize undersea threats. A cost-plus-award-fee contract for $11 million will provide continuing system design agent and engineering services. In addition to various systems engineering and integrated logistics support tasks, modifications to the AN/SQQ-89(V)15 will be addressed under this contract.
AN/SQQ-89 is the U.S. Navy's Surface Ship Undersea Warfare Combat System, in service on more than 100 destroyers, cruisers, frigates and Aegis destroyers. Using a variety of underwater sensors, the system detects, classifies and localizes submarines and other undersea threats. It includes a hull-mounted sonar, a sonobuoy processing system and a fire-control system used to launch weapons against undersea targets, all integrated with the AEGIS combat system. Working closely with the Navy, Lockheed Martin led the system design team, and has been delivering, modernizing and supporting it for over 20 years. The current system employs state-of-the-art commercial computing technology to achieve major performance gains over previous designs, at reduced cost.
