Security Council members call for end to violations of withdrawal line in Lebanon
14 November -- Members of the Security Council today called for an end to the "dangerous" violations that have continued along the withdrawal line in Lebanon, which is known as the "Blue Line."
Briefing reporters after closed-door consultations, the Council President, Ambassador Peter van Walsum of the Netherlands, said that Lebanon had yet to assert its authority over all of its territory. Although there had been "tangible progress" in this direction, he said the Government of Lebanon was required to "take effective control of the whole area vacated by Israel last spring and assume its full international responsibilities."
Ambassador van Walsum said Council members shared the conclusions of Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who in his latest report stressed the need for the Lebanese Government to take control of the entire territory, including putting an end to continuing provocations on the Blue Line.
The Council President also expressed the members' appreciation for the work of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) as well as the Secretary-General's Special Representative, Terje Roed Larsen, and Personal Representative, Rolf Knutsson.
