ANGOLA: Rebels attack central stronghold
UNITA rebels launched an attack near the central Angolan town of Kuito,
killing 19 people and wounding 27, the Portuguese news agency Lusa said on
Tuesday. The report said about 150 heavily-armed rebels on Sunday attacked
Catala, about 30 km from Kuito. The rebels attacked with mortars, occupied
the town for some three hours then withdrew after taking an unspecified
number of civilians with them, whose whereabouts remained unknown.
In northern Malange province, Governor Flavio Fernandes told Lusa that the
army recaptured two areas held by UNITA since 1992, including the diamond
zone of Cambo Sungingi, late last week. He gave no details of the fighting
but said that ongoing army operations could soon allow the reinstatement of
government administration in some of the province´s 10 districts, five of
which were still under rebel control.
An army officer, contacted by Lusa in Malanje, said that in the second
operation troops captured the village of Caombo, killing about 30 rebels,
including a captain, for a loss of three soldiers killed and five wounded.
