NAMIBIA: UNITA raids paramilitary camp in the Caprivi
Two suspected UNITA rebels and a Namibian security force member were killed
and others wounded in a gun battle last Thursday night along the
Trans-Caprivi Highway in the volatile Caprivi strip, 'The Namibian' reported
on Monday.
The attack on a Special Field Force (SFF) camp 30 km east of Bagani took
place just as a fact-finding trip from the French and British diplomatic
missions in Namibia was completing a security assessment in the Caprivi.
Both countries have issued travel advisories to their nationals intending to
go to the northeast of the country.
Apart from the attack, the suspected rebels planted anti-tank mines under
one of the small bridges along the Trans-Caprivi Highway and blew up four
wooden telephone poles about three kilometres west of the SFF camp. Damage
had also been caused to the strategic highway by anti-tank mines, believed
to have been planted by the group. The latest attack took place some 15 km
east of where three French children were shot dead and their parents
seriously wounded in an attack in January.
