In Geneva, Annan briefs European and US envoys on Cyprus
9 November -- As the current round of proximity talks on Cyprus continued in Geneva, Secretary-General Kofi Annan today held a series of meetings there with concerned officials from Europe and the United States.

According to his spokesman, Mr. Annan met separately this morning with United States and United Kingdom envoys on Cyprus to discuss a paper he presented to the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides yesterday. They also discussed "the way forward," Spokesman Manoel de Almeida e Silva told reporters at UN Headquarters in New York.

"He met at 10:30 a.m. with Ambassador Alfred Moses, the United States Presidential Envoy for Cyprus, and at 11:30 a.m. with Sir David Hannay, the UK Special Envoy for Cyprus," Mr. de Almeida e Silva said.

Later in the afternoon, Mr. Annan held further discussions on Cyprus with Ambassador Philippe Petit of France, who represented the Presidency of the European Union.

In order to facilitate the process, there is a news blackout on the substance of the proximity talks.
