DRC: Demonstrations banned in Bunia

The Ugandan army has announced a ban on all demonstrations in the unsteady
northeastern town of Bunia, after an attempt to overthrow rebel leader
Ernest Wamba dia Wamba at the weekend. In an announcement broadcast over
Bunia radio on Wednesday, Ugandan army commander in the DRC, General
Katumba Wamala, told the people of Bunia that the army was trying the
resolve the leadership problems within the Rassemblement congolais pour la
democratie-Mouvement de liberation (RCD-ML) "without the shedding of
civilians' blood". He called for cooperation and calm to stop "suffering,
chaos and incitement". "Hence demonstrations in support of one side or
another are banned," the announcement stated. "All soldiers, be they
Congolese or Ugandan, are ordered to stay in their designated areas. The
security of the region will come under the UPDF [Uganda People's Defence
Forces] which will conduct surveillance or patrols to ensure there are no
saboteurs or banditry." The town was reported tense but calm after the
coup attempt against Wamba by his deputy Mbusa Nyamwisi which resulted in
two days of fighting.
