WEST AFRICA: IRIN-WA Update 843
NIGERIA: Curfew lifted in northern state
Nigerian authorities have lifted an evening curfew they imposed in the
northern city of Kaduna following ethnic and religious clashes in May that
left more than 100 people dead. The curfew had been in effect from midnight
until 6 a.m. daily.
Nigerian radio reported on Tuesday that peace had returned, but security
forces would continue to man checkpoints in the city.
Clashes had also broken out in Kaduna in February after a demonstration
against the imposition of strict Islamic law was announced. At least 100
people were killed. Nine northern states have announced adherence to Islamic
law. Nigeria's north is largely Muslim, while the south is mainly Christian.
Sporadic clashes between Muslims and Christians, as well as between various
ethnic groups, have broken out in Nigeria in the past year, leaving hundreds
dead.
