GREAT LAKES: IRIN-CEA Update 1,048
DRC: Atrocities reported around Beni, Lubero
Civil society sources in the Beni and Lubero area, just south of Bunia,
have warned of "massacres, killings, armed robberies and rape" in the
region, which, they say have been exacerbated by the RCD-ML leadership
troubles. Particularly affected are suburbs near Rughenda airport where
residents are obliged to be at home by 19:00 hours for their own safety,
IRIN learnt. "Even then, residents can expect a visit from heavily-armed
men in uniform," the sources said. "Human rights violations have become
the order of the day." They blamed Ugandan soldiers for much of the
terror, particularly after attacks by Mayi-Mayi militiamen. Victims were
reportedly either deported to Uganda, dumped in underground cells or they
simply disappeared.
