Annan's representative calls for end to violations of Lebanon's withdrawal line
7 November -- Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Personal Representative for Southern Lebanon has called for an immediate end to violations of the country's withdrawal line, known as the Blue Line.

Personal Representative Rolf Knutsson issued his call following recent reports by the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) that "a number of aircraft and helicopters" had violated Lebanese air space.

"I am increasingly concerned about the continuing violations of this nature," Mr. Knutsson said in a statement issued out of Beirut yesterday.

"It is essential that all such violations come to an end without further delay, as well as any other violations of the Blue Line, in conformity with the undertakings of both governments concerned," he stressed.

The Secretary-General appointed Mr. Knutsson as his Special Representative for Southern Lebanon in August. Among other tasks, the Special Representative has a mandate to coordinate UN activities in the area and carry out day-to-day liaison with the Lebanese Government on the implementation of Security Council resolutions.
