Top UN rights official to visit Middle East to promote tolerance
6 November -- Bearing a message of tolerance, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, will travel to the Middle East on Wednesday to review the situation there in the light of recent events, a UN spokesman announced today.

"During this trip she will convey to the parties the importance of developing a culture of human rights and tolerance which she believes are the key to a peaceful and stable future in the region," spokesman Fred Eckhard told reporters at UN Headquarters in New York.

Mrs. Robinson is scheduled to begin her visit in Israel before moving on to the Occupied Palestinian Territories. She will also travel to Egypt and Jordan.

Upon her return, the High Commissioner is expected to report the results of her visit to the Commission on Human Rights and the General Assembly.
