New head of UN force for Ethiopia/Eritrea pledges to consolidate peace efforts
6 November -- Arriving in Asmara over the weekend, the new Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) pledged to build on what has been accomplished so far in the quest for peace.
Major-General Patrick Cammaert of the Netherlands told journalists upon his arrival on Saturday evening that the peacekeeping force would soon be deployed, with 200 military observers and 4,000 troops from at least two dozen nationalities.
"All are committed to the task ahead and ready to work with the people and governments of Ethiopia and Eritrea to bring about a lasting peace," the General said.
Noting that the military observers already on the ground were reporting good cooperation from both of the parties, General Cammaert expressed confidence that "we will quickly build on this firm foundation."
UNMEE troops have been mandated by the UN Security Council to monitor security agreements between the two parties while political negotiations continue in an effort to achieve a lasting settlement of their border dispute.
