ZIMBABWE: Nigeria mediates in Zimbabwe row with UK on land

Nigeria is using a state visit by President Robert Mugabe to mediate in
Zimbabwe's diplomatic row with Britain over plans to seize land from white
farmers, reports said on Friday. Senior aides to Nigerian President Olusegun
Obasanjosaid he was pushing for a solution based on the 1979 Lancaster House
accords that paved the way for independence of the former colony of
Rhodesia.

On Wednesday night, Obasanjo said at a joint news conference with Mugabe:
"We (Nigeria) have been involved in a series of negotiations to resolve the
problem amicably." Mugabe said that he had "briefed President Obasanjo on
the situation in our country". "We are facing difficulties and as at now we
need the support of Nigeria in finding a solution." Mugabe did not specify
what sort of help he was seeking.
