ZIMBABWE: More land grabs

Zimbabwe's 'Daily News' has reported that thousands of peasants, government
officials and war veterans have descended on commercial farms in a new
scramble for land after rains, which fell around the country at the weekend.
These random settlements threaten to throw the government's fast-track land
resettlement programme into disarray, the newspaper said.

The mainly white Commercial Farmers' Union (CFU) said on Tuesday that
tension was high in the face of increased attacks on their members. The
union added that war veterans appeared to be more aggressive after President
Mugabe threatened to prosecute whites for alleged war crimes committed
during the liberation struggle. Ignatius Chombo, the minister of local
government and chairman of the resettlement committee, told peasants in the
Darwendale/Trelawney area at the weekend that they should go ahead and
parcel out farms to themselves because of a shortage of government
technicians to demarcate the plots.
