1 November -- As the Cyprus proximity talks resumed today in Geneva, the United Nations envoy coordinating the effort warned against expectations of spectacular results this month.
Alvaro de Soto, Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Advisor on Cyprus, told a press conference before the start of the talks that he did not expect any major breakthroughs in the talks. He added, however, that "both parties are conscious of the fact that there are opportunities that exist now." In response to a question, Mr. de Soto noted that he did not see any early prospects of face-to-face talks between the parties.
The current round of talks, which is expected to run through 10 November, got under way this afternoon when Mr. de Soto met separately with Mr. Rauf Denktash and Mr. Glafcos Clerides.
The Secretary-General is expected to attend the talks next week when he visits Geneva on his way to Qatar to attend the summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, according to a UN spokesman.
