Lockheed Martin Receives Danish Air Force Contract to Modernize LANTIRN with Laser Spot Tracker

ORLANDO, FL, November 7th, 2000 -- Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control-Orlando recently received a modification to an existing Royal Danish Air Force (RDAF) contract to incorporate the Laser Spot Tracker (LST) in the RDAF LANTIRN (Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night) fleet. Adding the LST is one part of LANTIRN's modernization program that will keep the system state-of the-art through 2020. The addition of the LST provides the RDAF a true force multiplier and the most advanced LANTIRN Targeting system in service today.

The LST allows the pilot to acquire targets designated by ground troops, UAVs, or other aircraft and to launch laser-guided weapons against those targets. The Charge Couple Device (CCD) TV enhances target identification and tracking during daylight operations. The 40K laser increases the use of the Laser Designator up to 40,000 ft., as well as, designating targets at significantly longer standoff ranges than current laser designators, thus keeping them out of harm's way.

"This is a significant enhancement to the RDAF LANTIRN targeting system that will allow pilots to expand their operational tactics," said Rich Lovette, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control's LANTIRN International Program Manager. "This modular capability can be added to the targeting pods of all existing LANTIRN customers."

LANTIRN allows aircrews to operate worldwide in daylight or darkness at all mission altitudes up to 40,000 feet to meet the requirements for precision attack of surface targets. As the backbone of precision attack, LANTIRN is a combat-proven force multiplier in both the Gulf War and the Kosovo conflict that provides a spectrum of capabilities to the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, and the air forces of twelve allied nations.
