ATK Awarded $4.5 Million Contract to Produce Special Operations Munitions

Nov 2, 2000

ATK (NYSE: ATK) (Alliant Techsystems) said it has been awarded an 18-month contract valued at $4.5 million from the U.S. Army Armament, Research, Development, and Engineering Center (ARDEC), Picatinny Arsenal, N.J., to continue production of the Selectable Lightweight Attack Munition (SLAM). The contract includes an option that could increase the total value to $9.6 million and continue production through July 2002.

The majority of the work on the contract will be performed by ATK Precision Fuze Company at its production plant in Janesville, Wis. Additional work will be conducted by ATK Integrated Defense Company in Elk River, Minn.

SLAM is a compact, lightweight, hand-emplaced munition developed for U.S. special operations forces enabling them to engage targets from five inches to 25 feet. It features multiple fuzing modes allowing detonation by magnetic signature, infrared signature, delayed timing, or by the operator, making it extremely effective against armored vehicles and other large targets.

Blake Larson, president, ATK Precision Fuze Company, said ATK is pleased to continue to support the mission of U.S. special operations forces through the SLAM program.

"SLAM is a key munition system in the arsenal of America's special operations forces, which are an important element in the U.S. Army's transformation to a lighter, more lethal, and more rapidly deployed combat force," said Larson. "We are proud to continue production of this highly effective weapon system, which is designed especially for small-scale regional conflicts in which our special operations soldiers are more likely to participate in the future."

"This contract is great news for ATK's workers and the U.S. Army," said U.S. Rep. Paul D. Ryan, who represents Wisconsin's first Congressional district, in which the Janesville plant is located. "ATK's facility in Janesville has long been serving the Army with top-quality production of a variety of defense systems. The SLAM contract enables ATK to continue working to help transform our armed forces into an even more effective fighting force for the 21st century."

ATK has been an industry partner to the U.S. Army and its soldiers for more than 60 years. Sales to the Army accounted for approximately 32 percent of total revenues in the most recent fiscal year, making the service ATK's single largest customer. Major ATK Army programs include small-caliber, medium-caliber, and large-caliber ammunition, the Objective Individual Combat Weapon (OICW), and tactical barrier and munition systems.

ATK Precision Fuze Company produces electro-mechanical and electronic fuzes and proximity sensors for use in artillery, mortar, rocket, cannon, air-delivered, and special operations systems. The company is part of ATK's Defense Systems segment, which had fiscal year 2000 revenues of $221 million.

ATK is a $1.1 billion aerospace and defense company with leading market positions in munitions, smart weapons and precision capabilities, propulsion, and composite structures. The company, which is headquartered in Hopkins, Minn., employs approximately 6,400 people and has three business segments: Conventional Munitions, Aerospace, and Defense Systems.
