INTRO: Peru's military says a revolt by an army unit in the southern part of the country is virtually over with all but eight of the mutineers captured. From Lima, V-O-A's Bill Rodgers reports.

TEXT: The Peruvian Army says it has rounded up more than 40 soldiers who took part in an uprising Sunday against the government of President Alberto Fujimori. In a communique late Monday, the army says the head of the rebellion Lieutenant Colonel Ollanta Humala Tasso is still at large, along with seven other rebels.

Sunday, Colonel Humala and about 50 of his soldiers briefly seized a mining town in southern Peru and called for the ouster of Mr. Fujimori and the arrest of his ex-spy chief, Vladimiro Montesinos. The mutineers called on other army units to join their revolt, but none did so.

The uprising came one day after Mr. Fujimori dismissed his military high command, because of the officers' alleged ties with Mr. Montesinos. The former intelligence chief has been in hiding since returning to Peru last week from Panama where he had been seeking political asylum. His return aggravated Peru's political crisis that began last month when Mr. Fujimori fired his powerful spy chief and called for new elections. (Signed)
