NEWSPAPER SAYS POLICE THINK CHECHENS SET OSTANKINO ON FIRE.
"Nezavisimaya gazeta" reported on 27 October, citing only a
"well-informed and reliable source," that Russian law
enforcement agencies suspect the Ostankino television tower
was deliberately set ablaze with "the involvement of
Chechens" (see "RFE/RL Newsline," 28 August 2000). According
to the daily, which receives financing from Boris
Berezovskii's LogoVAZ, "law enforcement agencies knew that
Chechen field commanders had planned terrorist acts in Moscow
for 26-27 August." An ethnic Chechen employed as a technician
at the tower was approached by other Chechens and offered
$30,000 to plant explosives in the tower. The technician
reportedly suggested that the tower be set on fire instead.
