Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release October 30, 2000
PRESS BRIEFING
BY
JAKE SIEWERT
The James S. Brady Briefing Room
1:42 P.M. EST
Q Jake, on Peru, the President said last week he will be
watching closely the situation, and there is now a small number of
military leaders who are asking President Fujimori to resign and form a
new government. What is the position of the White House regarding the
calls from the small part of the military leaders to Fujimori?
MR. SIEWERT: Well, we're continuing to look at what happens in
Peru very closely and monitoring the situation there. From all reports,
President Fujimori remains in charge and commands the loyalty of the
armed forces. And he is committed, he has told us he is committed to
the OAS-backed reform process that could - will lead to free and fair
elections.
We're going to continue to - our main policy there is to try to do
everything we can, working with the OAS to move Peru quickly to free and
fair elections, and the OAS's Secretary General was in Peru last week.
And that's what we've made clear. And we've also said that it's very
important at this moment that all elements within Peru support a
Democratic transition.
Q Just quickly, do you think it will be better for the Peruvian
democracy to have a transitional government from now to the elections in
April?
MR. SIEWERT: I don't know - I think what we're mostly concerned
about is seeing a transition, a Democratic transition to another round
of elections, and that those elections be fair and free.
