Senior Dutch military officer to head new UN mission in Ethiopia/Eritrea
30 October -- A senior military official from the Netherlands will head the new United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE), according to documents released today at UN Headquarters in New York.

An exchange of letters between Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the Security Council confirms Mr. Annan's appointment of Brigadier General P.C. Cammaert as Force Commander of UNMEE. General Cammaert, whose appointment is effective 1 November, is expected to arrive in the area during the first half of the month.

Having joined the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps in 1968, General Cammaert most recently served as Commander of the Multinational UN Standby Forces High Readiness Brigade (SHIRBRIG) since December 1999.

UNMEE was set up by the Council in July to maintain liaison with Ethiopia and Eritrea and establish a mechanism for verifying the cessation of hostilities agreement signed one month earlier. The ceasefire, which ended a two-year border dispute, was reached following proximity talks led by Algeria and the Organization of African Unity.

In September, the Council authorized the deployment of up to 4,200 military personnel to monitor the agreement and help ensure the observance of security commitments.
