Annan calls for inquiry into killing of ethnic Tamil inmates in Sri Lanka
27 October -- "Profoundly distressed" by the reported killing of a group of ethnic Tamil inmates of a rehabilitation centre in Sri Lanka, Secretary-General Kofi Annan today called for a probe into the incident and voiced his vigorous condemnation of terrorist acts.

A spokesman for Mr. Annan said in a statement that the Secretary-General expected that the authorities would make every effort to conduct an impartial inquiry into the deaths of more than 20 inmates in the Bandarawela centre "with a view to bringing to justice those responsible."

"He also appeals to all parties in Sri Lanka to refrain from any further escalation of violence, especially terrorist acts which he condemns in the strongest possible terms," the statement said.
