Security Council delegation to visit East Timor, Indonesia next month
26 October - The United Nations Security Council has confirmed that it will send a delegation to East Timor and Indonesia next month to review the work of the UN mission in the newly independent territory and Jakarta's progress in disarming militia in West Timor.

According to a just-released letter from the Council to Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the visit will take place from 9 to 18 November, and will review progress in the implementation of Council resolution 1272, which established the UN Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) and resolution 1319, which requested Indonesia to disband militia groups in West Timor, respectively.

The seven-member delegation will be led by Ambassador Martin Andjaba of Namibia, the president of the Security Council for the month of October. The mission also includes representatives of Argentina, Malaysia, Tunisia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The Council's trip to the region comes in response to invitations by UNTAET chief Sergio Vieira de Mello and Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Alwi Shihab.
