Annan calls on political forces in Côte d'Ivoire to work towards free elections
26 October -- Expressing "great concern" over the latest developments in Côte d'Ivoire, Secretary-General Kofi Annan today called for restraint by all sides and urged the country's political forces to strive towards a democratic political process.
A spokesman for Mr. Annan said in a statement that the Secretary-General regretted the loss of innocent life during the ongoing demonstrations and called upon all political, religious and social actors to ensure security for all.
"The Secretary-General recalls that he had deplored the current electoral process, which deprived the people of Côte d'Ivoire of the opportunity to freely exercise their rights and elect their leaders," the statement said.
"He believes that there is now an opportunity to put in place a democratic political process that will allow the people of Côte d'Ivoire to freely elect their representatives. He appeals to all political forces to work towards this end," the spokesman said, adding that Mr. Annan would continue to follow the situation and remained in touch with all concerned parties.
