PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY ASKS ANNAN FOR PROTECTION
The Palestine Observer Mission October 25 asked for an urgent meeting of
the UN Security Council to consider the continuing violence in the Occupied
Territories and establish a UN force to provide protection for Palestinian
civilians.
In a letter to the president of the Security Council, Ambassador Nasser
Al-Kidwa, head of the mission, said that Israel "is persisting with its
campaign of terror against the Palestinian people in total violation of the
Fourth Geneva Convention...(and) in blatant disregard for the understandings
reached at Sharm El-Sheikh."
"The continuing excessive use of force by the Israeli occupying forces, using
all sorts of heavy weaponry against the Palestinian people, has resulted in more
casualties. Yesterday alone three more Palestinians died, including two children
under the age of 18 years, and about 50 were injured by bullets," Al-Kidwa said.
"We call upon the Security Council to urgently convene a meeting to consider the
situation and to establish a United Nations protection force to be dispatched in the
occupied Palestinian Territory, including Jerusalem, with the aim of providing much-
needed protection for the Palestinian civilian population," he said.
The UNSC has not set a date for the meeting.
