INTRO: The State Department is warning U-S citizens not to travel to Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. As we hear from V-O-A Correspondent Art Chimes, the travel advisory cites a heightened risk of terrorist attack in the troubled region.

TEXT: The travel warning was issued Tuesday, after weeks of deadly violence in the region. The State Department says Americans should keep a low profile, avoiding shopping areas, buses and demonstrations.

U-S government employees have been barred from travel to the Palestinian territories and have been urged to avoid Arab East Jerusalem. The travel advisory says U-S diplomatic offices will temporarily suspend public services "from time to time" to ensure the safety of its personnel.

The State Department says Americans who live in the West Bank or Gaza strip should consider moving to a safe location.

Israel attracts large numbers of American tourists each year and tourism is a key part of the Israeli economy - especially in Jerusalem. Tourism is reported to have dropped off this month, since the violence began. (signed)
