UN envoy holds meetings in Cyprus to prepare for next round of talks
23 October -- A top-level United Nations official held a series of meetings in Cyprus today following up on the latest round of talks on the divided island and preparing for upcoming negotiations.

Meeting with a number of concerned parties, Alvaro de Soto, the Special Advisor to the Secretary-General on Cyprus, is setting the stage for the next round of talks, which will start in Geneva on 1 November.

Mr. de Soto met this morning with Mr. Glafcos Clerides and Mr. Rauf Denktash, according to a UN spokesman. "He later met with the Ambassadors of the Five Permanent Members of the Security Council," spokesman Fred Eckhard told reporters at UN Headquarters in New York.

This afternoon, Mr. De Soto began a series of meetings with party political leaders on both sides. "This will go on till Friday, when he will meet again with Mr. Clerides and Mr. Denktash," Mr. Eckhard said.

Mr. de Soto is scheduled to leave Cyprus for Geneva on Saturday.
