U.S. Team to Attend OAU Talks in Algiers on Ethiopia/Eritrea

STATEMENT BY PHILIP T. REEKER, DEPUTY SPOKESMAN
ETHIOPIA/ERITREA
The President's Special Representative for Ethiopia and Eritrea,
former National Security Advisor Anthony Lake, will lead a U.S. team
to attend negotiations sponsored by the Organization of African Unity
beginning on October 23 in Algiers regarding a peaceful resolution to
the border conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
The United States commends the Organization of African Unity and the
Government of Algeria for helping to broker the June 18 Cessation of
Hostilities Agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
The United States encourages the Governments of Ethiopia and Eritrea
to use the meeting in Algiers to make progress toward a final,
comprehensive, lasting peace agreement.
