INTRO: Terrorism has claimed another victim in Spain, just 12-hours after a massive protest against the terrorist campaign carried out by the separatist group ETA. Gil Carbajal reports from Madrid more than a dozen people have been slain since ETA called off a 14-month truce in December.

TEXT: Máximo Casado Carrera, a 44-year-old official at a maximum security prison , was killed in the Basque regional capital of Vitoria. A bomb attached to his car exploded as he was leaving for work.

He had been active in the Communist labor union and had organized protest rallies during the months-long kidnapping of a colleague by ETA. For many years he had trained prisoners, including ETA members, to return to society after serving their terms

He was the 16th person to die from terrorist violence since ETA called off a truce in December. Many of those victims were members of Spain's ruling Popular Party and the main-opposition Socialist party.

His slaying took place just 12-hours after 150-thousand people protested ETA terrorism in Bilbao. The demonstration had been called by Juan José Ibarretxe, the chief minister of the Basque regional government that is controlled by the pro-independence Basque National Party.

The march was boycotted by ETA's political wing and the Popular Party, which accused the Basque National Party of using the rally to shore up its weakened political situation.

Since the the Basque National Party was abandoned last summer by ETA's political wing in the regional parliament, it has been ruling the region with a minority government. The Popular and Socialist parties have been pressuring the Basque chief minister to call early elections and have discussed forming a coalition government. (SIGNED)
