VOICED AT:
INTRO: At the United Nations today (Friday), the Security Council extended the mandate of U-N peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo for two months. Correspondent Barbara Schoetzau reports from U-N headquarters.
TEXT: The Security Council unanimously passed the resolution extending the mandate. But the resolution also deplores lack of progress on the national dialogue in the D-R-C and lack of cooperation with the United Nations by all parties.
Speaking for the United States, U-S representative Mark Menton said U-S support for the decision to extend the mandate is tempered by the reluctance of the hostile parties to adhere to the Lusaka Peace Accord and cooperate with UN personnel already in the region.
//// MENTON ACT ////
There can be no peace in the Congo unless and until the parties to the conflict uphold their Lusaka commitments. There will be no further deployment of U-N personnel as long as volatile confrontations between the belligerent parties continue.
/// END ACT ///
Mr. Menton said relief agencies cannot address the critical humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as long as they are denied safety and access to all parts of the country, including the eastern area.
