Commission on Human Rights to hold special session on Middle East on 18 October
11 October -- The Geneva-based United Nations Commission on Human Rights has decided to open its special session on the situation in the Middle East on 18 October.
The 53-member Commission will be discussing the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian Territories in the context of the ongoing violence in the region.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, welcomed the move, which followed a request from the Council of Arab Permanent Members of the League of Arab States. Under the Commission's rules of procedure, approval of at least 27 countries is needed for a special session to be held. As of yesterday, 48 countries had expressed support for the initiative.
The forthcoming special session -- the fifth convened by the Commission on Human Rights -- will last for up to three days.
