Canberra, Oct. 10 (CNA) Australia's Foreign Minister Alexander Downer told Parliament on Monday that the Solomon Islands lies on the brink of social and economic disintegration.
He stressed the importance of the peace talks that are scheduled to begin on Tuesday in Townsville, Queensland. A total of 130 delegates from the South Pacific country have come to Australia to take part in the talks.
Moore told Parliament that arson attacks, intimidation, assault and death threats have been constantly occurring in the nation's capital Honiara in the three months since an armed takeover of the government by the Malaita Eagle Force and elements of the nation's police force on June 5.
Downer stressed that the success of the peace talks lies entirely in the hands of the Solomon Islands' own people. (By Peter Chen)
