VOICED AT:

INTRO: Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak have been discussing ways to end the violence between Israelis and Palestinians. Dale Gavlak reports from Cairo.

TEXT: Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat made his third visit to Egypt in ten days to discuss the clashes. Violence between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian protesters has left scores of people dead, most of them Palestinians. After meeting with President Mubarak, Mr. Arafat called the situation "dangerous" and pointed to Israel's use of missiles, helicopters and ammunition against the Palestinians.

Egypt's Information Minister Safwat el Sherif said President Mubarak stressed the importance of securing a cease-fire, halting the deterioration in the peace process and withdrawing Israeli troops from Palestinian ruled areas.

Mr. Sherif said there was still no confirmation of a four-way summit between Israel, the Palestinians, Egypt and the United States. Mr. Arafat said he spoke with President Mubarak about a possible summit this week in Egypt with U-S President Clinton. But the Palestinian leader did not say whether he would accept Washington's proposal for Egypt to host the meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.

Arab League chief, Esmat Abdel Meguid, welcomed the possibility of such a meeting.

///MEGUID ACT//

We welcome this initiative of President Clinton, because I think he is trying sincerely to find a solution and this could be the occasion, but the question is not a meeting but what will come out of the meetings and if Barak will respect the decision taken at Sharm El Sheik if the meeting takes place.

///END ACT///

The Arab League will hold its own emergency summit in Cairo on October 21st and 22nd to discuss the latest Israeli-Palestinian violence. Most Arab counties, including Iraq and Kuwait, plan to attend the proceedings. The last Arab summit in Cairo was held four years ago and excluded Iraq. (Signed)
