Secretary-General congratulates President Kostunica on his inauguration
9 October -- Congratulating the new President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia on his inauguration, Secretary-General Kofi Annan said that the election of Dr. Vojislav Kostunica marked "an important step towards the restoration of peace and stability" in the country and throughout the region.
"Your assumption of leadership in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia offers a unique opportunity to open a new chapter in the relations between your country and the United Nations and the international community more widely," Mr. Annan wrote in his letter to President Kostunica released today at UN Headquarters.
Noting that these relation have been characterized by difficulties in recent years, the Secretary-General suggested that "to make a fresh start" the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia should submit an application for membership in the United Nations, as called for in relevant General Assembly and Security Council resolutions.
"The United Nations is eager to be at your side in the efforts to resolve the problems of your country and the region," Mr. Annan said. He also congratulated the people of the country, stressing that their victory would give heart to all those who strive for democracy.
