INTRO: The violence along Lebanon's border with Israel has escalated with claims by the radical Muslim movement Hezbollah that it has seized several Israeli soldiers. Ed Yeranian in Beirut has details.
TEXT: Hezbollah's usually reliable official television station confirmed that it had captured a number of Israeli soldiers. Another report claimed that three soldiers had been seized in the occupied Shebaa Farms region.
Meanwhile, Israeli warplanes and helicopters continued to fly over the Lebanese border region as Hezbollah guerillas and Israeli troops exchanged mortar and artillery fire.
Hezbollah fired several Katyousha rockets into the disputed Shebaa Farms border area after a number of Lebanese-Palestinian demonstrators were killed or wounded.
The shootings erupted after hundreds of Palestinian refugees living in Lebanon began throwing stones at Israeli troops from across the border.
The demonstrators, mostly young men, were carrying Palestinian flags and shouting "death to Israel."
The United Nations has asked Lebanon's prime minister to take control of the border area to put a stop to the violence.
The violence Saturday marked the first time there have been any casualties along the Lebanese-Israeli border since Israel withdrew its troops from southern Lebanon last May. (Signed)
