Ross Briefing at Sharm el-Sheik
(U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
(Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt)
October 5, 2000
Press Briefing by Ambassador Dennis Ross
On the Secretary's Plane en route to Sharm el-Sheikh
Egypt from Paris, France
October 5, 2000
AMBASSADOR ROSS: Let me say the following. We had long intensive
discussions today but in fact on the security issues, they were
productive. There was strong commitment by both sides to do all they
could to try to calm the situation. Both sides actually gave
instructions simultaneously to commanders back in the field. There's a
recognition that they've got to find a way to get from where we are
back to the task of peace making. It was a long day and I think in the
area of security, there certainly were real mutual efforts to try to
find ways to calm the situation and we'll see. Obviously this has to
be translated on the ground.
QUESTION: What kind of instructions to commanders?
AMBASSADOR ROSS: Both sides were very clear in terms of trying to
focus on the key flash points, trying to avoid trouble in those areas.
In a sense, trying to create some separation in those areas.
QUESTION: So they told their commanders to try to avoid flash points.
Try to have some separation. That's what you mean.
AMBASSADOR ROSS: Yes.
