INTRO: Officials of the War Crimes Tribunal in the Hague say they oppose any political deal that would allow Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic to escape justice. Lauren Comiteau has this report.
TEXT: With Slobodan Milosevic's future uncertain and talk circulating about possible immunity agreements for him, Tribunal officials are stressing that the only place for Mr. Milosevic is before judges in The Hague. Prosecution spokesman Paul Risley explains why.
///ACT RISLEY///
Certainly no individual, especially the person who is the number one fugitive from this Tribunal, can be offered what is in essence a get out of jail for free card by this tribunal or by any other political figures in the international scene.
///END ACT///
Paul Risley says that is the message the War Crime chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte will give to diplomats who are working to stabilize Serbia's political future.
///ACT RISLEY///
The prosecutor has made it very clear that she supports those diplomatic efforts to diffuse the crisis in Belgrade as long as they are undertaken not at the expense of the authority of the tribunal.
///END ACT///
Prosecutor Carla del Ponte was in Kosovo Friday, visiting the scenes of some of the crimes for which Mr. Milosevic was indicted. From there, she called on Vojislav Kostunica to hand over Slobodan Milosevic. I am ready for him tonight, she said. Mr. Kostunica, meanwhile, has said he will not turn over Mr. Milosevic. He has called the Tribunal a court controlled by the United States. It is an accusation the Tribunal vigorously denies. (Signed)
