INTRO: Israel has pulled back tanks from flash points in the West Bank and Palestinians have pledged to control rioting in an effort to end the violence that has left nearly 70 people dead. VOA Correspondent Meredith Buel reports from Jerusalem.

TEXT: Israeli tanks withdrew from key intersections in the West Bank as part of what the army described as a cease-fire with Palestinian security officials.

The Israeli Army released a statement saying Israeli and Palestinian security officials have agreed to stop the violence.

Previous agreements to end the violence in the past eight days of fighting have all been broken.

The word came after Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat failed to sign a formal agreement to end the bloodshed during U-S sponsored negotiations in Paris.

Some clashes were reported Thursday, but the level of violence was far lower than in previous days.

The fighting began last week when Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon visited a sensitive holy site in Jerusalem's Old City that is sacred to Muslims and Jews. (Signed)
