VOICED AT:
INTRO: U-N Secretary-General Kofi Annan has again called for respect for democracy in the former Yugoslavia. At the United Nations, VOA Correspondent Breck Ardery reports on reaction to the events in Belgrade.
TEXT: At U-N headquarters, spokesman Fred Eckhard read a statement made by Secretary-General Annan who was visiting Paris.
///ECKHARD ACT///
He said the people of Serbia have spoken and made a clear choice. They are asking for democratic rule. They want to have a say in the decisions affecting them and I hope that this choice and their voice will be heard.
///END ACT///
Earlier, the Secretary-General had voiced his strong disagreement with the idea that the war crimes indictment against President Slobodan Milosovic be lifted.
Britain's ambassador to the United Nations, Jeremy Greenstock, told reporters the scenes of mass protests in Belgrade reminded him of similar uprisings in the past.
///GREENSTOCK ACT///
There is clearly huge anger on the ground and we have seen scenes like this before in the development of European politics over the last 10 years in getting rid of communism. It looks as though we are seeing them again.
///END ACT///
The U-N Security Council discussed the developments in Belgrade during a closed session. However, there are no immediate plans to hold a public meeting on the situation. (Signed)
