Ethiopia/Eritrea: Annan nominates chief for UN's newest peacekeeping mission
2 October -- Secretary-General Kofi Annan has nominated Botswana's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Legwaila Joseph Legwaila, as his Special Representative to lead the Organization's newest peacekeeping mission.

Mr. Annan nominated Ambassador Legwaila to lead the UN Mission in Ethiopia/Eritrea (UNMEE) in a letter to the Security Council, a UN spokesman told journalists in New York today.

The Mission has offices in both of the two East African countries involved in the border dispute, and its mandate includes monitoring the withdrawal of the respective troops to agreed upon locations, and observing adherence with the 18 June Agreement on the Cessation of Hostilities.

The Security Council created UNMEE in July and in September authorized a 4,200-person operation, including military observers, troops and civilian staff. As UNMEE's operations gather momentum, the first UN military observers have moved to position on both sides of the border and began patrols a week ago.
