INTRO: The future of the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks is in jeopardy after Saturday's violence, the worst in four years in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. As both sides brace for another day of clashes, the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli security forces rose to at least 16. Ross Dunn has more from Jerusalem.

TEXT: The most severe clashes have involved Israeli troops exchanging live gunfire with masked Palestinian gunmen as well as Palestinian security forces.

The armed Palestinians have been fighting alongside thousands of rioters hurling rocks at Israeli forces across the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

As the fighting threatened to continue, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak telephoned Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to ask for Mr. Arafat's "personal intervention to stop the violence".

Mr. Barak told the Palestinian leader the fighting would not force Israel to make more territorial concessions. He said the two sides must resolve their differences through dialogue.

The trouble began Thursday following a visit by opposition leader Ariel Sharon to the Haram Sharif Islamic compound in Jerusalem's walled Old City. The following day, Israeli riot police stormed the compound, killing several stone-throwing demonstrators.

The shrine is the third holiest in the Islamic world. At the same time, it is the most sacred place to Jews as the Temple Mount, site of their holy Temples in biblical times. (SIGNED)
