ATK Awarded $3.6 Million Contract to Develop Next-Generation Tank Ammunition Training Cartridge
Oct 5, 2000
ATK (NYSE: ATK) (Alliant Techsystems), said it has been awarded a $3.6 million contract from the U.S. Army Armament, Research, Development, and Engineering Center (ARDEC), Picatinny Arsenal, N.J., for the first phase of development of a new 120mm tank ammunition training cartridge for use by the U.S. Army's M1A1/A2 main battle tank. The contract includes an additional development phase plus production options that could increase the total value to $35 million over the next six years.
Under the contract, Alliant Ammunition Systems Company, New Brighton, Minn., will develop the XM1002 Target Practice with Tracer training cartridge, which will provide U.S. soldiers with a comprehensive and realistic training experience for the 120mm M830A1 High-Explosive Anti-Tank Multi-Purpose with tracer tactical cartridge.
Michael McCann, president, Alliant Ammunition Systems Company, said ATK is pleased to continue its commitment to developing and producing high-quality 120mm tank ammunition for the U.S. Army.
"Our confidence in our ability to provide an outstanding product to the soldier is enhanced by a strong partnership between the Office of the Project Manager for Tank and Medium-Caliber Armament Systems (OPM TMAS), ARDEC, and ATK," said McCann. "We have benefited previously from this partnership, as we worked together as a team to develop and produce a family of 120mm tank ammunition that was so successful in Operation Desert Storm."
McCann said the XM1002 is a high-priority program of strategic importance to ATK, which considers the development and production of highly effective training and tactical rounds as the foundation of its ammunition business and the focus of its technology.
Development and production work on the XM1002 program will be performed at ATK's engineering and manufacturing facilities in New Brighton, Minn., Radford, Va., Toone, Tenn., and Rocket Center, W. Va.
ATK also is developing the U.S. Army's next-generation tactical 120mm armor-piercing tank ammunition round, the M829E3, which will replace the M829A1 and M829A2 rounds.
