Lockeed Martin Awarded Study Contract for Joint US Navy/Royal Navy Project

PORTSMOUTH, ENGLAND, October 6th, 2000 -- Lockheed Martin UK Integrated Systems has been awarded a study contract to explore the integration of the US Navy's Co-operative Engagement Capability (CEC) into the Royal Navy. CEC is a capability that optimises the use of available sensors and weapons in a task force. It allows radar measurements associated with target tracks to be shared with all co-operating networked CEC units, employing rapid secure communications and accurate position referencing. This enables each unit to form an identical tactical picture, with common identification across the force, to maintain constant tracking of targets which in turn results in improvements in situation awareness, inter-operability with the US and anti-air warfare performance benefits. The Assessment Phase 1 contract will develop a solution to integrate the US CEC system onto the Type 23 Frigate whilst highlighting generic issues associated with future integration onto the new Type 45 destroyer. In addition, Phase 1 will propose a solution and risk mitigation plan for Assessment Phase 2.

Lockheed Martin UK Integrated Systems will head a team that also includes Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics and Surveillance Systems - Surface Systems, based in Moorestown NJ, as well as BAE SYSTEMS and DERA. The team brings to the table extensive knowledge of the UK platforms and of the technologies involved and issues associated with CEC integration. In particular, the experience already gained integrating CEC into the US AEGIS Combat System. Lockheed Martin UK Integrated Systems also brings proven experience of integrating and managing complex naval weapons programmes including Merlin, the Royal Navy's new multi-mission helicopter and the installation of the Tomahawk Weapon Control System onto the UK Submarine fleet.

Speaking on the award Keith Robinson, Managing Director of Lockheed Martin UK Integrated Systems said "CEC is an exciting opportunity for us. We will be able to take advantage of our proven track record as Systems Integrators as well as leverage off the experience of our Lockheed Martin colleagues in the US working successfully with CEC."

It is expected that MoD will select a single Prime Contractor for the CEC programme in 2002. The projected in-service date for CEC is 2008.
