Oct 3, 2000

ATK (Alliant Techsystems, NYSE: ATK) said it has received a contract valued at approximately $1 million from Hellenic Arms Industry (EBO), Athens, Greece, to provide hardware and assembly technology for lightweight 30mm (LW30mm) high-explosive dual-purpose (HEDP) tactical and training ammunition.

Under the one-year contract, Alliant Ammunition Systems Company, New Brighton, Minn., will provide LW30mm HEDP hardware kits consisting of projectiles, cartridge cases, fuzes, and propellant, and the technology to assemble the rounds to Hellenic Arms Industry, which will complete final assembly and testing at a facility in Greece and then deliver the ammunition for use on AH-64 Apache attack helicopters.

Hellenic Arms Industry, which is owned by the government of Greece, manufactures light weapons and ammunition for use by the country's military forces.

Jed Holzapfel, vice president, International Business Development, said ATK is pleased to share its expertise in medium-caliber ammunition assembly technology with the government of Greece.

"As America's largest supplier of conventional munitions, we have delivered more than 120 million rounds of medium-caliber ammunition to the U.S. and allied nations," said Holzapfel. "Both the U.S. government and our international ammunition customers recognize that our market leadership position reflects a long-standing commitment to quality and affordability."

Developed and fielded for the M230 chain gun on the Apache helicopter, ATK's lightweight 30mm ammunition has demonstrated excellent performance at all ranges. ATK also designed and developed the round's point-detonating fuze. The company is the sole-source supplier of the ammunition to the U.S. and its allies.

ATK is a $1.1 billion aerospace and defense company with leading market positions in munitions, smart weapons and precision capabilities, propulsion, and composite structures. The company, which is headquartered in Hopkins, Minn., employs approximately 6,400 people and has three business segments: Conventional Munitions, Aerospace, and Defense Systems.
