VOICE AT:
INTRO: One Israeli police officer is dead and another wounded after a Palestinian policeman opened fire on them in the West Bank. VOA Correspondent Meredith Buel has details from Jerusalem.
TEXT: A Palestinian policeman, shouting "God is great" in Arabic, suddenly opened fire on Israeli border policemen sitting in a jeep near the West Bank town of Kalkilya, about 20-kilometers northeast of Tel Aviv.
The gunman was part of a joint Israeli-Palestinian security patrol, and has been taken into custody by Palestinian officials.
Witnesses say windows of the Israeli vehicle were shattered by gunfire, and the ground was splattered with blood after the attack.
Earlier this week an Israeli soldier was killed when two bombs exploded next to a convoy carrying Jewish settlers in the Gaza Strip.
Thursday, Israeli soldiers and Palestinian protestors were injured during clashes in the compound surrounding the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem's Old City.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak is demanding that Palestinian officials take more effective steps to prevent attacks on Israelis. (Signed)
