Yugoslav elections show voters' wish for change, Annan says
27 September -- Following the presidential elections in Yugoslavia on 24 September, Secretary-General Kofi Annan today said the polling results revealed a clear wish on the part of the voters for "genuine change," a United Nations spokesman said in New York.
Speaking to the press at UN Headquarters, spokesman Fred Eckhard said the Secretary-General had been following "with close interest" the developments in Yugoslavia.
"The Secretary-General hopes that the election will result in a government with a clear mandate, with which an open and honest dialogue will be possible, and that the problems of the region will be addressed in the spirit of cooperation rather than confrontation," the spokesman said.
