India to withdraw troops from UN mission in Sierra Leone
21 September -- The Government of India has indicated to Secretary-General Kofi Annan that it intends to withdraw all of its 3,059 soldiers from the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL).

India continues, however, to be prepared to participate in UN peacekeeping operations, a UN spokesman told reporters today in New York.

Indian authorities also assured Mr. Annan that their commitment to UN peacekeeping was "undiminished," spokesman Fred Eckhard said.

UNAMSIL's remaining troop contributors include Bangladesh, Bolivia, Canada, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, France, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mali, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Russian Federation, Slovak Republic, Sweden, Thailand, United Kingdom, United Republic of Tanzania, Uruguay and Zambia.
