Military observers start training for new UN mission in Ethiopia-Eritrea
18 September -- As the newly authorized United Nations peacekeeping mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea continues to gather pace, UN military observers today began a training course to prepare for the challenges ahead.
The four-day training programme, which precedes the observers' deployment in the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE), is taking place in both Addis Ababa and Asmara. UNMEE will maintain offices in both capitals, with regional offices at Mendefera in Eritrea and Mekele in Ethiopia.
The observers are being trained in the organization of UN peacekeeping missions, the role and code of conduct of UN military observers, and the history, culture, economy and geography of the Mission area. The course also covers an overview of the conflict and the humanitarian situation, and includes training in first aid and mine awareness techniques.
On Friday, the Security Council authorized 4,200 peacekeeping troops, including 220 military observers, for the Mission with an initial six-month mandate that includes monitoring the ceasefire, the redeployment of troops from both sides and the temporary security zone.
