INTRO: The United Nations Security Council today
(Friday) unanimously approved a resolution authorizing
a peacekeeping mission for Ethiopia and Eritrea. VOA
Correspondent Breck Ardery reports from the United
Nations.
TEXT: The resolution, which was approved without
debate, establishes a peacekeeping force of up to 42-
hundred troops to monitor the ceasefire between
Ethiopia and Eritrea. That ceasefire was reached on
June 18th, ending the two-year war between the two
nations in the Horn of Africa.
Although there has been no fighting since, Ethiopia
has said it will not withdraw its forces from parts of
Eritrea until the peacekeepers arrive.
Earlier this week, the United Nations began deployment
of a much more limited group of military observers to
the two countries.
Diplomats say there is widespread support for the
peacekeeping mission. However, the hope is that the U-
N force will help create an atmosphere in which
Ethiopia and Eritrea can reach a comprehensive peace
agreement in their border dispute. Both nations have
committed themselves to work for such an
agreement.(Signed)
