VOICED AT:
INTRO: Hundreds of Sierra Leonean nationals are leaving
Guinea, amid fears of persecution by Guinean authorities.
V-O-A's Luis Ramirez reports from our West Africa bureau
the exodus follows a recent series of attacks along
Guinea's borders with Sierra Leone and Liberia.
TEXT: The Sierra Leoneans have been leaving the Guinean
capital, Conakry, mainly by sea.
They began leaving after Guinean authorities rounded up
members of the country's large Sierra Leonean and
Liberian populations this week, checking identity papers.
The action came after Guinean President Lansana Conte
called for a mobilization, to root out those he accuses
of helping rebels launch attacks on his government from
Sierra Leone and Liberia.
The attacks in recent weeks have killed about 80 people.
Officials in Guinea say all of the Sierra Leonean and
Liberian nationals who were detained earlier have now
been released. Witnesses in Conakry tell V-O-A that
police have continued to check the identification of
those who appear to be Sierra Leonean and Liberian.
