Proximity talks on Cyprus to resume at UN Headquarters
11 September -- The latest round of United Nations facilitated proximity talks on Cyprus will open tomorrow at UN Headquarters in New York, a spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan announced today.
The Secretary-General will meet on Tuesday with both delegations separately, spokesman Fred Eckhard said. At 3 p.m., the Secretary-General will meet with Mr. Glafcos Clerides and his delegation, followed by a 4 p.m. meeting with Mr. Rauf Denktash and his party.
The previous round of talks was held last month in Geneva. Speaking at the end of the round on 4 August, the Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, told reporters that the two sides were aiming for a comprehensive settlement of the problem, leaving nothing to be negotiated later. This would require a binding timetable accompanied by an independent mechanism to verify compliance, he said, noting that since nothing would be agreed upon until everything was agreed upon, any news would necessarily come at the end of the process.
